In 804 a thirty-year-old monk from the Japanese island of Shikoku arrived in Chang'an, the capital of Tang China, as part of an official embassy. Within two years he would be ordained a full master of an esoteric Buddhist lineage, and would carry it home to found a school that still draws pilgrims. The monk was Kūkai. Huiguo, the master who taught him, passed away within months of completing the transmission.

That story, and the five years a Beijing director spent putting it on screen, is the subject of a documentary its makers describe as the first Chinese film to present Kūkai's life comprehensively. Titled KŪKAI, it held its world premiere at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills on 30 July 2026.
