If you are buying for a man with a full diary of dinners this December, choose something he will use at the table, at the wheel and in the morning before he leaves. The five gifts below run from £27 to £2,450. Two come from British makers founded in the same year, 1777, and one is the first single malt distilled in the Scottish Borders since 1837. ## Dents Snetterton Fingerless Driving Gloves

John Dent opened his glove business in Worcester in 1777, and Dents is now based in Warminster, Wiltshire. Its Snetterton driving glove, £69, is a half-finger glove with the classic keyhole cut-out on the back, knuckle holes and perforated detailing. The hairsheep leather is unlined, so the glove sits close to the hand and gives a firmer grip on the wheel. A wrist strap closes with a Dents stud, and an elasticated inner wrist keeps the fit snug. Dents has added royal blue to the colours this season, and it also sells leather wallets that can be personalised for Christmas.

## Alfred Jewel Cufflinks From the Ashmolean

The Alfred Jewel was found in 1693 at North Petherton in Somerset, near Athelney, and it is a famous exhibit at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. It dates from the ninth century, and the inscription around its edge links it to King Alfred the Great. The museum's shop sells a replica as a pair of cufflinks, £95, designed with The Bill Skinner Studio and sold only by the museum. They reproduce the filigree inscription, the enamelled central figure thought to represent sight and the dragon's head that once held a pointer used for reading. They are brass plated in 14ct gold, and they suit a groom, a best man or anyone who wears a double cuff to dinner.

## The Borders First Release Single Malt

The Borders Distillery opened in Hawick in 2018, and on 14th September it launched its first single malt. It is the first whisky distilled in the Scottish Borders since 1837. The First Release is eight years old, matured in first-fill bourbon casks and finished in malmsey Madeira casks, and it is bottled at 46%. The bourbon casks give caramel, vanilla and honey, and the Madeira adds dried fruit and warmth. The distillery made 10,000 bottles, and a 70cl bottle costs £46.

## Kent Cherrywood Travel Hairbrush

William Kent founded Kent Brushes in London in 1777, the same year John Dent opened in Worcester. The company first supplied George IV in 1820 and has held a Royal Warrant through nine reigns. Its oval travel brush, £27, has a cherrywood body and pure white natural bristles, which spread the hair's natural oils from root to tip. It is made for travel, so it fits an overnight bag for a party out of town.

## Antique Shakudo Cufflinks in Gold

For the man who collects, AC Silver has a pair of antique cufflinks made around 1890, £2,450. Each oval link holds a panel of shakudo, a traditional Japanese alloy with a deep blue-black tone, decorated with chrysanthemums, blossom and bamboo in gold and silver tones. The cases are 18ct yellow gold with chain-link fittings, and the reverse carries 18ct gold hallmarks. They are the gift on this list most likely to be handed down.

## Cufflinks as a Gift

**Q: Are cufflinks a good gift for men?**
Cufflinks are a good gift for any man who wears double-cuff shirts, including the dinner shirt worn with black tie. They are practical, they last for decades with little care and they can be engraved with initials or a date. Antique and heritage designs give the gift a story of its own.

**Q: What does gifting cufflinks mean?**
Cufflinks are a traditional gift for milestones such as a wedding, a graduation, a first job, a promotion or a retirement. A bride may give them to her groom, and a groom often gives them to his best man and ushers. The gift usually marks respect and celebration.

**Q: Are cufflinks an intimate gift?**
Cufflinks are personal but not necessarily intimate. Partners give them, but so do parents, friends and employers. A plain or heritage design suits a friend or a colleague, while an engraved pair with a name or a date feels more personal.
